Tours

WHAT IS THERE TO SEE AND WHERE ARE WE GOING?

All central tours, like the “Best of Central” and the “Summer Tour,” start and end in Male, the capital of the Maldives. Guests will be picked up comfortably from Velana Airport by the dive boat and returned there at the end of the tour.

For the “Deep South” tours, which also start in Male, we travel by boat to the deep south. The return trip is then by domestic flight back to Male.

If the tour starts in the south, guests need to take a domestic flight from Male to the south. Of course, it’s also possible to stay on board for both tours. The days between the tours, when guests can stay on board, are free of charge. Only statutory fees need to be paid.

The German-speaking tour leader on board the ship, together with the experienced crew, ensures a smooth process and individual and warm care of all guests. Not far from the first anchorage, we offer the opportunity at a simple dive site to refresh diving equipment and skills at the beginning of the tour. Usually, 3 dives are made per day. Possibly only 2 dives during channel crossings or bad weather conditions. Depending on the weather, the central tour takes us from Malé through the southern Malé Atoll, Vaavu Atoll to the Ari and Rasdhoo Atoll.

In the months of September and October, the AMBA heads to its home area in the northern atolls, including the world-famous Hanifaru Bay, where snorkeling with hundreds of manta rays is possible. Anchorage is always in protected lagoons. A variety of different dive sites with different diving conditions are visited, showing a high degree of flexibility and leaving nothing to be desired.

Best of Central
On the “Best of Central” tour, the AMBA dive boat travels via Rasdhoo Atoll, on through the entire Ari Atoll and on to Vaavu Atoll, back to Male Atoll and our home harbour in Hulhumale, which is located near Velana International Airport.

On the central tours, mainly big fish lovers get their money’s worth. The minimum requirement is 50 dives. Inexperienced safari divers with at least 50 dives are welcome and will be looked after individually. The Central Atoll tours usually last 12 days and 11 nights.

Best of North
During the “Best of North” tour, where AMBA has been a pioneer for almost 17 years, the ship starts in Male and heads north. On the way, it visits the northern coral atolls of Lhaviyani, Baa, and Raa, as well as the stunning Hanifaru Bay. Here, we have the chance to snorkel with hundreds of manta rays or swim with whale sharks. The ship starts and ends the tour in Male, making it convenient for guests, as no domestic flight is needed.
For many years, the far north has been AMBA’s home. We rarely encounter other dive boats there, and divers can enjoy a nearly untouched area with incredibly beautiful corals and a peaceful atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere. Trips to the north are limited on purpose, offering a special and very personalized diving experience.
End-of-Season Tour: Up Close with Big Fish
Our “Summer Tour” through the Male and Vaavu Atolls offers experienced divers an unparalleled adventure focused on encounters with large marine creatures. This trip is perfect for those seeking spectacular encounters with ocean giants—far from coral gardens but filled with adrenaline and unique experiences.

One of the highlights of this tour is the extraordinary dive site known as the “Sharktank,” located just off the harbor of Hulhumale. Originally used as a cleaning station for fishing boats, this spot has evolved over the years into a magnet for big fish. The rinsing of blood and fish remains attracted an impressive variety of marine life, including rays, large schools of spinner sharks, hammerhead sharks, guitarfish, tiger sharks, and bull sharks. Today, the “Sharktank” is regarded as one of the best dive sites in the region.

As shark feeding is prohibited in the Maldives, some divers here use a method called “smelling.” A sturdy container filled with fish scraps is placed on the seabed, releasing fish blood through small openings. This technique attracts the animals without making them aggressive, creating ideal conditions for impressive yet safe observations. We strictly adhere to the laws and refrain from both feeding and smelling. Even without these methods, there is plenty of big fish to observe – a little patience always helps.

During the tour, we dedicate most of our dives to this unique spot, while our safari boat anchors in a nearby tranquil lagoon. Weather permitting, we also visit other outstanding dive sites in the South Male and Vaavu Atolls, which promise equally fascinating encounters with big fish even at this time of year.

This tour is exclusively for experienced divers who enjoy spectacular encounters with big fish and are willing to forgo vibrant coral gardens. An adventure for anyone who wants to fully embrace the thrill and magic of the Maldives.
